Mrs.Deborah Simms will be showcasing the Gift Shop on Friday evenings at 6:00 pm leading up to Passover .

Passover is quickly upon us, so if you should want anything for this special occasion, please note that she will be here to assist you.

In addition to Friday evenings, the gift shop will also be open on Sundays from 9:00am – 12:30 pm

Join or Host a Family Seder

This year we are trying something new to help people find or host a seder for Passover. The synagogue will be matching those that are in need of a Pesach seder with those that have space to host guests at their seder.

Hosts:

It is often the oldest and youngest members of the community that need a home for the holiday, so please consider inviting some people to your seder table, even if you only have room for one person. This is a great opportunity to share the holiday of Passover and

get closer to the other members of our community. While this is designed for members of the synagogue, it is available to any Jews in the community (especially those in the military). We will thoroughly screen any non-members before matching them up with anyone, and in the end it will be the hosts who decide whether to extend an invitation to their “match”.

Guests:

Whether you are a single sailor stationed here for the holiday, a family with kids that is debating celebrating Passover, or just looking to meet some other Jews in the community, you are invited to sign up and join in some delicious food, and joyous celebration. Jewish knowledge is not a prerequisite, so even if this will be your first seder ever, give it a go!

You can be as specific as you like in your request / offer. We’ll do our best to make the most fitting match possible. If you are not a synagogue member you may still fill out an application, but ensure you leave a good contact phone number or simplycall our office at (850) 433-7311 and we will make arrangements for your request or offer.

B’nai Israel Sisterhood 2012

In May of 2012, B’nai Israel sisterhood will be electing a new board which will include Shannon Rubin as the in-coming president. We would like to extend an invitation to all women associated with B’nai Israel synagogue to consider participating in sisterhood in the coming year and joining our sisterhood board.

The mission of B’nai Israel Synagogue, affiliated with Women’s League of Conservative Judaism, is to strengthen and unite the women of our synagogue and support them in efforts to understand and perpetuate Conservative/Masorti Judaism in the home, synagogue, and community; and to reinforce their bonds with Israel and with Jews worldwide. In practice, we come together for social events and events that support our congregation.

What a beautiful thing to bring together Jewish women and (non-Jewish spouses of Jewish men) of all ages to support and learn from one another and enjoy one another’s company. You don’t have to be a member of the synagogue to join in our sisterhood. Anual dues are $32, and all you have to do is show up! Stay tuned to the website to learn more about upcoming events. Remember When…

We recently recovered some film footage of the Torahs making the trip from the original prayer house to the (then) brand new B’nai Israel Synagoge on 9th Ave. This is some amazing footage from 1954 and was made possible by the generosity of Ms. Nora Eskin. In the near future, we would like to have a screening for the members so that we can identify some of the people in the movie. In the meantime, enjoy this rare treasure.

2012 Worldwide Wrap

Once again, the members of B’nai Israel participated in the Worldwide Wrap, where some 200+ congregations and thousands of participants took on the mitzvah of wrapping teffilin on Superbowl Sunday. This year was another great event with lots of participants, including some children from the religious school.

2nd Annual World Wide Wrap

Please join us again on Superbowl Sunday for B’nai Israel’s second year of participating in the Worldwide Wrap. Last year was a huge success and we hope to have another great event. This year we will be starting the event with a breakfast sponsored by the Men’s Club in conjunction with the religious school’s breakfast in the Abe Levin Auditorium.

What: The event will start with a short lesson on the tradition and details of tefillin by Rabbi Gerson. Learn how to wrap, then join us for a short weekday Shacharit service. Breakfast prior to and a nosh to follow.

When: February 5th, 2012

Where: B’nai Israel Synagogue – Abe Levin Auditorium & Main Sanctuary.

Time: 9:30am

Who: Any Jew above the age of 13. Both men and women are welcome! If you have tefillin, bring em’. If not, we have a few sets you can use.

What is the Worldwide Wrap?

For several years the Conservative Movement has sponsored an event where synagogues from around the world all wrap tefillin on Superbowl Sunday. The idea is to provide a fun and easy way to learn about this special mitzvah whether you wrap six times a week, or have never wrapped.

Photos from the Professor Israeli Talk

On January 5th, 2012 the B’nai Israel auditorium was packed with attendees to hear Professor Raphael Israeli, from the Hebrew University in Israel speak about the history of Islam and its growing influence in the world. Professor Israeli fielded numerous questions from the mixed audience and enlightened us all about the potential threats to Jews and Christians in the Muslim lands.

There were some wonderful photos taken at the event where you can see how large and captivated the crowd was. Special thanks to photographer Mark Saltz for his great work.
